FAQ-Frequently Asked Questions About Our Skincare

What is homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the balanced, self-regulating state in which an organ functions properly on its own. Every organ in your body has one — a liver in homeostasis, a gut in homeostasis, a heart in homeostasis simply does its job well when its internal balance is intact. Your skin, the largest organ of all, is no different.

It isn't something we add to your skin from the outside. It's the skin's own natural working order — the state we help it return to and maintain.

This is the whole point, because a skin in homeostasis already does the things people spend years and shelves of products chasing. A balanced, functioning skin is even in tone, resilient, soft, and clear — not because anything was applied onto it, but because the organ is doing its job. So our goal is never to force a result. It's to remove what's throwing the skin out of balance and support what keeps it there.

What makes Earth to You different from conventional skincare?

Most skincare starts from the idea that something about your skin needs to be fixed, covered, or changed. Our starting point is the opposite.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and like every organ it works best when it is in homeostasis — balance. We are not in the business of creating beauty or altering your biology. We don't believe that's ours to do. Our entire approach is to support your skin's homeostasis — to give the organ what it needs to function the way it already knows how. When the balance is there, the beauty takes care of itself.

I'm new to Earth to You — where do I begin?

Start with the foundation: the Flow Daily Ritual. There are two, and you'll want both:

This is your morning-and-night base for returning your skin to homeostasis. Consistency is everything here. Applying morning and night, day after day, is how you rebalance sebum and support the microbiome — how you steadily bring your skin's balance and function back.

Begin with the Flow ritual and let it become second nature. Once that's your baseline, you add a seasonal layer on top (a few questions down).

How do I apply the Flow Daily Face Ritual?

Follow the steps of the Flow Daily Face Ritual in order. This isn't a routine you can shortcut — each step sets up the next, and together they rebuild your skin's homeostasis.

  1. Massage with Raw Jojoba. Warm a generous amount between your hands and massage it into your face, really thoroughly. Raw Jojoba is the closest oil there is to human sebum, so this is how you signal your skin to rebalance and produce its own oil again. It also removes makeup, so this can double as your cleanse. (If you wear foundation or powder, please read our section on makeup — there's a reason we don't recommend it.)

  2. Wipe gently — but never squeaky clean. Wet our bamboo cloth with warm water and gently wipe away only the excess. Always leave a light residue of oil behind — especially in the beginning, leave quite a lot. Normal skin should never be left squeaky clean; your skin needs plenty of that oil to balance itself. Most conventional products strip your sebum away with cleansers; here you're doing the opposite, retraining your skin to make its own. Use only the bamboo cloth — no other towel. It's so thin, soft, and quick-drying that it won't drag or scratch your skin, and it's naturally antibacterial.

Caring for your cloth: normally, just rinse it under warm water — no soap. The one exception is makeup: if you've used the cloth to take off makeup and it's stained, swap it for a fresh one and send the stained one to the wash. Use each cloth for about two days, hanging it to dry in the bathroom between uses, then switch to a fresh one every couple of days.

(If you have rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, or extreme dryness, don't wipe with the wet cloth at all. Massage the oil in and leave all of it on — your skin needs a lot of it to rebalance. If any is dripping, just tap very lightly with the dry bamboo cloth to catch what would run, and leave the rest. See our dedicated Rosacea and Eczema sections below for the slower, gentler way to begin.)

  3. Spray Rose Mist on top. This hydrates your skin and begins building your microbiome. Our Rose Mist carries lactobacillus ferment — a microbe already found on healthy human skin, so you're simply reintroducing more of your own — and comes from a 117-year-old rose farm. Rose is also calming to your nervous system. Timing matters here: your skin can only hold water once it has proper sebum, which is why the mist comes after the oil, not before.

  4. Apply the Face Elixir. This is made from a variety of whole plants slowly infused in plant oils for months. Think of it as setting out a bowl of fresh food for your microbiome — a nourishing home for those good microbes to live and thrive in.

  5. Add your seasonal layer. Finish with a little Sun Elixir in the warmer months or Winter Solstice Balm in winter, just a touch on top.

Do all of this morning and night. The morning ritual prepares your skin for the day; the night ritual lets it recover from whatever the day brought — sun, wind, cold, a long walk. Think of it like meditating morning and evening: night recovery is what stops small daily imbalances from ever becoming chronic inflammation, pigmentation, or lasting damage.

How do I apply the Flow Daily Body Ritual?

Flow Daily Body Ritual

The body follows the same logic as the face, with a simpler structure.

  1. Apply Raw Jojoba to wet skin, straight after your shower. Be very generous, and cover the whole body. Raw Jojoba is the closest oil to human sebum, so this regulates and rebalances your body's oil the same way it does on your face. A note worth repeating: our Raw Jojoba really is raw. The jojoba sold on most shelves has had its colour and scent stripped out to suit cosmetic formulas — and that stripped version no longer resembles your skin's own oil. Ours keeps its natural richness, which is exactly what makes it work.

  2. Spray Rose Mist all over. Same as the face — hydration on top of balanced sebum, plus microbiome support.

  3. Add your seasonal layer. Finish with Sun Elixir - Body in the warmer months or Forest Balm in winter.

For the body you only need one application a day, before bed, on wet skin after your shower — that's the ideal moment. Never apply the Sun Elixir or Forest Balm straight onto bare skin: build the sebum first, then the hydration, then the balm or elixir. Step by step, always.

(You'll notice the face has two finishing products — the Face Elixir plus a seasonal layer — while the body has just one. That's deliberate. Facial skin is thinner and more delicate, so it gets an extra, more powerful layer of seasonal support. On the body, a single product — Sun Elixir or Forest Balm — both nourishes the microbiome and helps you adapt to the season, because these too are made from plants slowly infused over months.)

What are the seasonal layers, and why do I need them?

You are a living, breathing creature of this earth — so we don't ask your skin to hide from the seasons. We help it move with them. You live like a flower, like a tree: you take the mountain walk, you go to the beach, you feel the cold and the sun, and you enjoy all of it, because your skin is supported through each season.

On top of your Flow Daily Ritual, you add the layer that matches the season:

  • Sun / warmer months — layer the Sun Elixir (Face and Body) over your Flow ritual.
  • Winter / colder months — layer the Winter Solstice Balm (Face and Body) and the Forest Balm (Body) over your Flow ritual.

Applied consistently, morning and night, these seasonal layers help your skin adapt instead of react. You become more resilient to weather and environmental change, and your skin barrier grows stronger through it all.

What do you recommend for oily, dry, or combination skin?

Here's something that reframes everything: there's really no such thing as a skin type. Oily, dry, and combination aren't fixed identities you were born with — they're all just the same thing wearing different faces: an imbalance in your sebum.

(A quick recap, in case this is the first section you've landed on: your skin naturally produces its own oil, sebum, to protect and moisturize itself. Conventional skincare strips that oil away, over and over. Your skin responds to being stripped in different ways — some skin overproduces and reads as "oily," some can't keep up and reads as "dry," some does both in different areas and reads as "combination." None of it is your true skin. It's your skin reacting to imbalance.)

So the recommendation is the same as it is for everyone — because the fix is the same. Start with the Flow Daily Ritual (Face and Body), applied consistently morning and night, and add your seasonal layer on top: Sun Elixir in summer and Winter Solstice Balm in winter for the face, and Sun Elixir — Body in summer and Forest Balm in winter for the body. As the Flow Ritual brings your sebum back into balance, the "type" simply dissolves. It can take some time to get there, but that's the whole point: keep going, and you end up with balanced skin rather than a label.
